How can I protect my teen driver?

Younger drivers lack experience behind the wheel, which means they often face a greater risk of being involved in an accident. Accordingly, it’s up to parents to help their kids hone their driving skills, while also setting a good example when it comes to distracted driving or other issues. Consumer Reports offers the following tips to help you help your kids be the best drivers they can be.

Choose a new vehicle carefully

If you plan on purchasing a new vehicle for your child, be careful when making your selection. Look for vehicles equipped with essential safety features and steer clear of cars that are able to reach excessive speeds. Also, make sure your child understands that their attention should be placed on the road and not on any passengers. You may even restrict the number of passengers until your teen is a more capable driver.

Stay informed

Any time your teen drives anywhere, ask him or her to provide you with all the major details on the trek. This includes the destination, the route your child will be traveling, what they’ll do if they encounter any trouble, and instructions to contact you when they arrive. If there are any problems or your child encounters vehicle issues, you’ll be able to call for help right away.

Set a good example

When driving with your child, make sure safety is a priority. Maintain a reasonable speed and follow all traffic laws to encourage your child to do the same. Keep distracted driving behaviors at bay by storing away your mobile device and setting it to silent. Also, be mindful of things like changing the radio station or adjusting your GPS. Even a moment of inattention can lead to a serious car accident.
