What shouldn’t I wear when riding a motorcycle?

You probably know that wearing the right gear, including helmets and jackets, is a must when riding a motorcycle. However, many riders in Tennessee don’t know that certain items of clothing are verboten when it comes to personal safety, for both themselves and their passengers. Business Insider explains what not to wear while riding to ensure you and others remain safe on the road.

Dark clothes head to toe

It’s unfortunate, but many passenger vehicles fail to notice motorcycles, which can lead to devastating accidents and injuries. You can reduce the risk by making sure you’re seen when riding and wearing dark clothing all over will prevent this from happening. Look for jackets with reflective materials, which will help you be seen at night. You can also choose a brightly colored helmet to make certain that other drivers notice your presence.

Fashionable helmets

In Tennessee, most riders are required to wear a helmet according to local laws. When choosing one, make sure you find a helmet that is approved by the Department of Transportation, which indicates that it’s been tested for safety and quality. Novelty or fashion helmets, or those that don’t offer complete coverage, are likely to fail in terms of protection.

Sandals or sneakers

Proper footwear is equally important. You want full coverage over the toes and proper ankle support, which will help with maneuvering the motorcycle. Wearing sandals while riding can result in serious injury since they offer so little coverage. Also, stay away from sneakers, which lack sufficient ankle support and also aren’t robust enough to protect your feet while riding.
