How to choose the right motorcycle helmet

Safety should be a crucial concern for motorcyclists in Tennessee. In addition to following all rules and regulations, choosing the right motorcycle helmet is imperative to keeping you and any passengers safe. But how can you be sure that a particular helmet is good for you? offers advice on the different types of helmets available and which ones offer the highest level of protection.

Research Safety Ratings

Helmets are manufactured according to certain safety standards, which allow consumers to be assured of their effectiveness. In the United States, the Department of Transportation is primarily responsible for determining the safety features of helmets. Other review standards may also be used, such as the Snell (M2015) standard (which is conducted by a non-profit group in honor of a racecar driver who succumbed to head injuries after a crash). You also want to consider the type of helmet. For instance, a full face helmet offers greater protection than an open face one.

Look for Features

Different helmets also come with different features. Materials include EPS foam, polycarbonate, carbon fiber, and fiber glass. Some materials will flex upon impact (such as polycarbonate), while others will split (such as fiber glass). Some helmets even come with additional safety features, such as easy removal in the event an injury occurs.

Know When to Replace Your Helmet

Even the best helmet will be less effective over time. Accordingly, you should know when it’s time to replace your helmet, so you continue to be protected while on the road. In general, helmets should be replaced every five years or so (but be sure to check the manufacturer’s instructions to be sure). You should also seek out a replacement if you’re involved in a crash or your helmet is damaged in any way.
