It seems that no one is watching the road while driving anymore

One of the first things we learned when learning how to drive is the importance of paying attention to the road. Watch for other cars and pedestrians. Drive defensively. Always look for a safe escape route in case of someone else driving into your lane.

But on the roads today, it seems like no one is paying attention. We all know that distracted driving – especially when it comes to the use of smart phones while driving – has reached a dangerous level. And we discussed in an earlier blog post, checking our cell phones might be compulsory, almost addictive behavior. But how bad has the problem gotten? And how can we protect ourselves from this extremely dangerous trend?

How Bad Is the Distracted Driving Problem?

A recent article in the New York Post shows a professional city bus driver watching YouTube videos while carrier passengers through New York.

Apparently, the bus driver was fired fairly quickly after this incident came to light – and he should have been fired – but this type of situation raises illustrates just how dangerous and pervasive distracted driving can be.

How Can You Protect Yourself?

The most important thing is to avoid accidents in the first place. Make a commitment to not use your phone while driving. Don’t be one of the people who cause this problem. Also, defensive driving is more critical now than ever. Assume everyone else is not going to drive well and always be prepared to avoid accidents.

If you have been in an accident caused by a distracted driver, you should seek medical attention right away and then call an experienced lawyer as soon as possible. You deserve to be compensated for your injuries and losses.
