Truck crash deaths in Shelby County spike

Shelby County residents may enjoy many things that contribute to a high quality of life for them and their families. Unfortunately, tragic events like car accidents can happen at any time and leave a negative mark on that quality of life. When it comes to sharing the road with large vehicles like tractor trailers, people in average passenger vehicles can be at quite a disadvantage. Records from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration paint a very bleak picture of these crashes in the region.

In 2015, there were 120 traffic fatalities in all of Shelby County and eight of these occurred in accidents involving large commercial vehicles. The following year saw overall accident deaths increase to 133. The number of people killed in large truck accidents that year spiked to 22, more than double the prior year. Across Tennessee there was also an increase in truck accident deaths from 2015 to 2016. In the former year, 116 lives were lost and in 2016 that number rose to 120.

Compared to its neighboring counties, Shelby County has a far bigger problem when it comes to these deaths. Between 2012 and 2016, Tipton County experienced only three deaths in truck crashes and Fayette County was the locatoin of eight. In that same five-year span, Shelby County saw 57 people die in accidents in which semi trucks or other commercial vehicles were involved.
