ATV Accidents and Injuries Worse for Children than For Adults

Most people feel that All-Terrain-Vehicles (ATVs) are relatively safe. Safe enough to let their children ride them, either as passengers while an adult is driving or as drivers themselves.

However, ATVs are not as safe as some people think. Just looking at the lack of coverage and seat belt protection makes this fact obvious, and science and also backs up common sense in proving the dangers of ATVs, especially to children.

Studies Showing the Dangers of ATVs to Children

According to the Journal of Emergency Medicine, children suffer more significant injuries in ATV accidents than they do in other types of vehicle accidents, as reported by Claims Journal.

The study involved examination of a number of statistical surveys and exploration of causation of serious accidents. The conclusion was that legislation and risk-reduction are not apparently not adequately keeping kids safe.

The causation factors for the majority of ATV accidents in the research examined involved easily preventable issues:

  • Overly powerful machines: ATVs come with a range of different engines and power ratings. When drivers try to handle ATVs that more powerful than the situation or their driving abilities demand, it increases the risk of accidents.
  • Younger drivers: Young drivers have a much greater tendency to driver recklessly and make mistakes.
  • Lack of safety equipment: Tennessee law requires ATV drivers under 18 to wear helmets, but that is a minimal safety requirement that provides very little real protection against serious injuries and death.
  • Dangerous driving: Obviously, driving recklessly is going to increase the risk of serious accidents and injuries.

The truth is that safety laws can do very little to protect you or your children. It is up to you to be safe and avoid accidents.
