Do you wear a seatbelt in an Uber or taxicab?

In recent years, ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft have become a popular way to travel. Choosing to use these or another taxiing service can be safer than driving drunk, hitchhiking or walking long distances at night.

But, are we remembering to stay safe when we get in a cab? Many studies are saying no…

Ride-share passengers are less likely to buckle up

Only 57 percent of people use their seatbelt while riding in a cab or ride-sharing service. That’s down from the 72 percent of people who would otherwise wear a seatbelt while in the backseat of a car.

Experts attribute this mainly to two different factors. One, being that passengers feel safer in the backseat of a vehicle. The second is that passengers feel uncomfortable strapping themselves into a vehicle that’s driven by a stranger.

The fact of the matter is that no matter which vehicle or seat you’re sitting in, choosing not to wear a seatbelt significantly increases your risk of being fatally or severely injured by a negligent driver. In fact, seat belt use saved approximately 14,955 lives in 2017 alone and could have saved 2,549 more people if they had been buckled up.

Tennessee law requires drivers, front seat passengers and those under the age of 18 to be bucked up while an automobile is in forward motion. Those who are 16 years or older and have a driver’s license are responsible for their own seatbelt use.

Backseat riders cannot be ticketed for not wearing a seatbelt. However, they can still severely injure themselves and others by choosing not to wear a seatbelt.

Failing to fasten your seatbelt could ding your rating

In the same way that riders can dock a driver’s rating for safety reasons, a driver also has the option to damage a rider’s rating for not wearing a seatbelt. This may limit the drivers that are willing to offer their services to you.
