Avoiding vehicle blind spots

As an avid motorcyclist in Shelby, you may have already had a proverbial "close call" with a motorist on the city's streets. This simply reaffirms the fact that we here at The Gold Law Firm have already learned from your motorcycling compatriots: sharing the road is often easier said than done. Drivers of traditional four-wheeled vehicles typically do not want to harm you; rather, it is often mere carelessness that leads to motorcycle accidents. While that may help you if you ever need to pursue a liability claim, you probably would rather avoid ever having an accident at all.

One of the more common reasons vehicles collide with motorcycles is because drivers did not see approaching bikes in their blind spots. All traditional four-wheeled vehicles have blind spots; according to YourMechanic.com, they are located on either side of a vehicle. beginning at the rearview mirror and extending backward in the shape of a triangle. These are just the standard blind spots; many vehicles (due to their designs) may have more. They may also be larger with certain vehicle types (like semi-trucks). Barriers and features along the roadway may also cause blind spots.

Staying out of a vehicle's blind spots can be done; simply remember these tips:

  • Avoid following a vehicle too closely
  • Check the vehicle's rearview mirrors as you approach; if you cannot see the driver's face, they cannot see you
  • Leave plenty of room between your bike and the vehicle when you pass
  • When you do pass, pass quickly

Of course, drivers are still expected to not rely solely on their mirrors when passing. If one turns into you when you are in a blind spot, it is likely they did not. More information on assigning liability in an accident can be found here on our site.
