Where should you mount your phone in the car?

Using a cellphone mount in the car is a safer way to follow your cellphone’s navigation directions. But because some states do not allow objects to be placed between the driver and the windshield, developers have gotten creative with different types of mounts you can purchase.

In Tennessee, suction cup mounts are legal so long as they don’t interfere with the driver’s direct line of sight. However, you should still explore your options when consider where to mount your phone.

Windshield

Windshield suction cup mounts are most popular because their position up on the windshield allows drivers to take a quick glance over at the navigation, rather than turning their entire head away from the road to view the directions.

However, some vehicles, such as the Jeep Patriot, have windshields that are much further away from the driver. If you have a deep or narrow windshield, using a suction mount on it may greatly limit your view of the road.

Try placing the mount on both the left and the right side of the steering wheel. If you find that the device is too large for the space or impairs your driving ability, consider another placement option.

Dashboard

Another type of mount stick on to a driver’s dashboard, rather than their windshield. The device will likely be slightly lower in this position. However, it may help drivers who feel uncomfortable blocking out part of their view through the windshield.

Some dashboard mounts may even extend the device closer toward the driver for those who have a hard time reading the directions.

Choosing this option may present more challenges than a windshield suction cup mount because the dashboard and center console shape and height can vary greatly from model to model. Before throwing out the receipt, you should make sure to test that your dashboard mount fits in the area you have available first.

Other areas

Another option you may be able to take advantage of is the CD mount. For vehicles with a CD player in the center console, these mounts plug into this area. The location of the directions is much further down in this case but is similar to vehicles that have built-in navigation screens in the center console.

Upgrading your deck to one that has a navigation screen may also be an option in newer cars for drivers who don’t like cellphone mount options.

Any of these options are a useful way to prevent distracted driving form causing a motor vehicle accident.
