Are drivers aged between 15 and 25 more dangerous?

There’s a reason why auto insurance premiums typically decrease after a person reaches the age of 25. Many experts believe that for most people, 25 is the age that the human brain reaches full development.

But, if teens can be legally permitted to drive at the age of 15, do young adults in this 10-year gap present unnecessary danger to the road? Here are a few situations in which a young person may be more likely to contribute to an accident.

Adapting to change

The part of the human brain that continues developing until a person turns 25 is the prefrontal cortex. This region of the brain is essentially responsible for assessing cause and effect before it happens. While young adults certainly aren’t incapable of anticipating what will happen next, they may be less likely to do it quickly in unfamiliar situations.

This can lead to accidents in circumstances where an extra step is required of the driver. For example, in harsh weather conditions, young adults may have trouble anticipating how the change will affect their driving. Similarly, they may have trouble anticipating what may be behind their car while driving in reverse.

Recklessness

Young adults who struggle to anticipate the consequences of their actions are also likely to disregard the risks too. This can lead to reckless driving behavior, such as:

  • Speeding
  • Swerving
  • Attempting to drive through yellow lights
  • Failing to make a complete stop at an intersection
  • Driving while under the influence

Ownership

Another reason why younger drivers may be more dangerous has to do with the car they own. Data has shown that in recent years parents tend to buy their teen their first vehicle. Further, teens who do buy their own car tend to purchase older, used vehicles that are more inexpensive.

These factors can cause young adults to value their vehicle less — especially in comparison to an older adult, who works 40 hours each week to afford their car payments.

Look out

While younger drivers may be more likely to cause an accident, practice makes perfect of any skill. If you have a child aged between 15 and 25, make sure to warn them of the risks above. For those who get caught in an accident with an inexperienced driver, it’s important to remember that you may have had trouble at that age too.

However, if you were injured, it’s still important to get the care you need to recover. By working with a personal injury attorney, you can negotiate an amicable agreement that helps you get onto the road to recovery without the additional costs.
