Staying safe in the parking lot during the holidays

'Tis the season for crowded parking lots and hurried pedestrians. If you have been to the shopping centers in Memphis lately, you may have experienced the chaos yourself. Over the course of a year, over 50,000 crashes happen in parking lots and garages nationwide. These crashes caused over 60,000 injuries and 500 deaths. Parking lots are the most dangerous at this time of year, with the extra traffic on wheels and on foot. What exactly makes them so dangerous and how can you stay safe while doing your holiday shopping?

Distracted driving

Unfortunately, some drivers don't seem to think good driving habits apply in parking lots. Just because you are not on the road, does not mean you shouldn't pay attention. In fact, you may need to pay more attention due to the high number of cars pulling in and out and the pedestrians who are everywhere. Nevertheless, the National Safety Council found some disturbing statistics about drivers in parking lots:

  • 66% admitted to making phone calls
  • 63% said they would program their GPS system while driving
  • 56% can be found texting
  • 50% even watch videos or take pictures

After you put your phone away, there are a few other tips you can follow to stay safe while you are driving through a parking lot:

  • Back out slowly, and remember that there are a lot more pedestrians than you may be used to.
  • Follow the signage, especially stop signs and one-way traffic signs.
  • Follow the rules of the road by staying in your lane and using your signals. Drive slowly and don't cut across a lot just because there is empty space.
  • Watch for children and other pedestrians who may not be looking for you. Unfortunately, distracted walking is almost as common as distracted driving, so don't assume pedestrians notice you.

You can drive and walk defensively by watching out for drivers who are not following the tips above. If you are walking, pay attention to your surroundings and assume cars do not see you. Wait until you are safely inside to check your texts or make a call.

Poor conditions

Some parking lot dangers are not the fault of the driver or the pedestrian. The sun goes down earlier these days, and weather can be wet and cold. This combination can turn a parking lot into a danger zone. Look for and avoid problems like potholes, debris, bad lighting, and poor signage. Too often, people slip or trip and fall in parking lots.

In addition, parking lots invite an entirely different type of danger in the form of theft and other crimes. The larger the parking lot, the larger the target for criminals. You can reduce the chances of becoming a victim by parking in a well-lit area, locking your doors and hiding purchases in your trunk or under blankets.

Don't let an accident spoil your holiday season. Stay safe in parking lots while you are out shopping.
