Do not underestimate the dangers of texting while driving

It is the same for most people in Tennessee and throughout the country: While everyone knows that texting while driving is dangerous, but almost no one actually changes their behavior. Almost everyone uses their smart phones while driving, risking the lives of everyone else on the road.

How bad is the problem of distracted driving, really? And what should you do to avoid accidents and to get the help you need if you have been in an accident?

Is the Problem Really That Bad?

As smartphone use has increased substantially over the past number of years, so has the number of accidents caused by distracted driving. According to the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security, the frequency of traffic crashes caused by distracted driving increased from 10,822 in 2008 to 24,785 in 2017.

That is more than double. More than twice as many accidents were caused by distracted driving in 2017 than there were just 10 years earlier.

It is no coincidence that smartphone ownership and use increased dramatically during that time frame, as well. The fact is that irresponsible smartphone use while driving is extremely dangerous and causes accidents.

What Can You Do to Avoid an Accident?

Well, the obvious answer is to avoid using your smartphone while driving. You can set up your GPS ahead of time and do not adjust it while driving. Let your text messages wait.

Also, even if you’re not the one using your smartphone, you need to be aware that someone else on the road most likely is using theirs. More than ever before, it is critical to exercise defensive driving. Always keep your eye out and prepare for ways to avoid accidents from drivers who are not paying attention to the road.

What Should You Do If You Have Been in An Accident?

If you have been injured in an accident caused by a distracted driver, talk with a lawyer. One thing many people don’t realize is possible is the ability to reconstruct smartphone usage. In many cases, we are able to determine exactly when the other driver was using the smartphone and what they were doing. When we are able to sync this activity up with the timing of the accident, proving the other driver’s liability becomes simple.

Make sure you work with an experienced lawyer who knows how to win your case.
