What can you do to cycle safely?

To keep Tennessee roads as safe as possible, drivers and cyclists have to look out for one another. There is no other way to make it happen. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration perhaps put it best: "A large percentage of crashes can be avoided if motorists and cyclists follow the rules of the road and watch out for each other."

This blog has already covered how motorists can keep an eye out for bicyclists, so let's take a look at what you, as a bicycle rider, can do to share the road well.

Follow road rules

Some basic rules the NHTSA reminds cyclists about include driving with the flow of traffic rather than against. Sometimes people on bicycles may feel more comfortable driving toward traffic because it may seem easier to see what is ahead, but remember drivers are expecting you riding with them just as other vehicles do. This expectation means you are safer if you follow this rule.

Also, when you are traveling by bike, do not toss out the rules of the road you follow when driving a car. They are the same. NHTSA says, "Obey street signs, signals, and road markings, just like a car."

Stay aware

Being on a bike means paying closer attention to the road as well. Even small objects, such as gravel and grates, can trip up a cyclist, so stay aware and make adjustments early when you see something ahead that might cause a problem.

The NHTSA says cyclists should not listen to music, text or do anything else that distracts you while riding.
