Can your car’s position decrease the risk of a truck accident?

Due to their large size, truck accidents tend to be some of the most severe motor vehicle accidents on Tennessee roads. Victims regularly suffer traumatic brain injuries, broken bones, paralysis and even death.

Certain driving practices place drivers at a greater risk for accident than others. How can drivers decrease their chances of a truck accident?

Avoid driving in a truck’s blind spots

As a driver, you understand that your car has “blind spots” that make it impossible to see other cars, bikes and pedestrians in certain regions surrounding your car. Trucks also have blind spots, but theirs are much larger than those of a typical motor vehicle.

A truck’s blind spots fall directly behind the vehicle, flare out to both of its sides and even extend directly in front of the truck. Avoid driving in a truck’s blind spots to prevent a driver from accidentally changing lanes into your car.

Trucks take more time to stop than smaller vehicles

Maintain sufficient distance between your car and the truck behind you. Never change lanes directly in front of a truck. Trucks use air brakes which have a lag time from the moment the driver applies the brake to when the brakes actually activate. This makes it impossible for a large semi-truck to abruptly stop if you change lanes too near the front of their truck.

In addition to a brake lag, full semi-trucks can weigh about 80,000 lbs.; a typical car weighs about 3,000 lbs. It takes more time for a vehicle as large and heavy as a truck to slow down and stop. When travelling at 65 mph, a car may take 316 feet to fully stop, while a large truck may take 525 feet.

As a driver, you need to anticipate the truck’s longer deceleration process and plan accordingly. If you have a truck following close behind and you are forced to slam on the brakes, you run a significant risk of having the truck hit the rear of your vehicle.
