What Is Defensive Driving?

Defensive driving is defined as being hyper-aware of the many threats and dangers that exist on Tennessee roads. It entails a number of safe driving behaviors that can greatly reduce your risk of being involved in a serious accident. But what does it actually mean to be a defensive driver? Business Insider offers the following tips to help you hone your ability and preserve the safety of yourself as well as your passengers.

Leave Room Between Your Vehicle and Others

Tailgating is when you follow closely behind another vehicle. Not only is this practice aggravating, it’s also quite dangerous. Consider what would happen if the car or truck in front of you stopped suddenly? That’s why it’s recommended to leave at least three car lengths between you and other vehicles to ensure you have enough time to react quickly.

Keep Your Eyes on the Road

With the myriad of distractions facing modern drivers it’s quite easy to take your eyes off the road. However, even taking your eyes off the road momentarily can be deadly, especially when driving on busy highways. Be sure to use you mirrors liberally and double check before changing lanes or making turns. Being alert and aware is your best defense against catastrophe.

Don’t Speed

In all situation it’s best to drive the proper speed limit. Going too fast can result in significant injury, while driving too slowly can congest highways and increase the chance of being involved in a minor fender bender. Stick to whatever the posted speed limit is and pay attention to what lane you’re driving in (i.e. stay out of the passing lane if other drivers around you are going faster).
