3 Motorcycle Safety Tips

For motorcyclists in Tennessee, there is nothing better than being on the open road. However, along with this feeling of fun and adventure is a serious risk of injury. That’s why it’s crucial for all motorcyclists to take the proper precautions to prevent serious accidents and injuries from occurring. Consumer Reports offers the following tips, which can be helpful to new riders as well as seasoned pros.

Wear a Helmet

While it’s a highly contested topic, facts show that helmets save lives. Some estimates show that driving without a helmet leaves riders 40 percent more likely to experience a fatal head injury, along with an increased risk of sustaining a serious brain injury. The type of helmet you choose can also have an impact, with full-face designs being preferred. Keep in mind that general wear and tear can reduce a helmet’s effectiveness, so they should be replaced every five years or so.

Drive Defensively

Driving defensively is defined as remaining alert and aware of your surroundings at all times. This is crucial for motorcyclists, as drivers of passenger vehicles often fail to recognize their presence on the road. It’s also important to keep weather conditions in mind. While a rain slicked road may not pose as much of a threat to a car, it can be deadly for a motorcyclists should lack of traction become an issue.

Select the Right Bike

If you’re just starting out, avoid purchasing a bike with a lot of power. A high-performance bike can be a lot to handle for new riders, and inexperience may increase the risk that you’ll suffer from a serious injury. It’s also important that you feel comfortable with the motorcycle you choose. When shopping be sure to get on the bike to see how it feels for you. You should be able to get on and off without issue, and your arms should be able to easily reach the handle bars.
