How Can I Safely Share the Road With Bicyclists?

As a Memphis motorist, you no doubt want to preserve safety for both yourself as well others. This is especially important when sharing the road with bicyclists. What might be a minor accident for passenger vehicles could be deadly to bicyclists, which is why recommend the following advice to ensure everyone remains safe and sound on the road.

Be Aware of the Law

First and foremost, cyclists are not permitted to operate their bikes on the sidewalk. They are beholden to the same laws as other motorists, including stopping at red lights, passing appropriately, and signaling turns. In this case, it’s a must for driver to treat bike riders just as they would any other vehicle. Don’t tailgate, don’t try to overtake a bicycle, and pay attention to signals to indicate turns.

Be Cautious With Right Turns

When turning right a bicyclist will often bend their arm at a ninety-degree angle. It’s important for drivers also turning right to be aware of this signal, as they could inadvertently overtake the bike while they are both making the turn. Drivers should also use their signals at all times so they don’t confuse bike riders making the same maneuvers.

Maintain Enough Room

Always maintain at least three feet of space between you and any cyclists on the road. If there are any issues three feet should provide sufficient time for you to stop (which will prevent a serious accident from occurring). You should also maintain an ample amount of space when passing a cyclist. If you can’t pass safely, follow behind the cyclists until it’s safe to go around (usually in a traffic free area).
