Parking lots are not much safer than roads for auto accidents

Most of us are extremely careful near roadways and highways. Whether we’re walking or driving, we all seem to naturally understand the dangers in these areas. But most of us feel pretty safe in parking lots. As long as we’re generally watching where we’re going, we don’t expect to get into accidents while walking through parking lots, where most drivers are going extra slow and driving more carefully.

Parking Lots Are Not as Safe as They Seem

However, accidents happen often in parking lots. In addition to the relatively commonplace rear-end accidents resulting in soft-tissue injuries, it is extremely common for pedestrians to suffer serious injuries after being struck by motor vehicles.

A Seven-Car Pedestrian Accident In Maryville, Tennessee

According to the Daily Times online, a 73 year old man was hit by a car in the parking lot of the Walmart in Maryville, Tennessee, in an accident involving seven cars.

A 91 year old man backed into the accident victim, pinning him against the car behind him before proceeding to accelerate rapidly into other cars. Apparently, the driver claimed that the accelerator got stuck and there were no citations issued, as the police did not suspect foul play or intoxicants of any kind.

Protect Yourself

This terrible accident is a clear example of how important it is to protect yourself. Fortunately, the primary victim is in stable condition and no one else was hurt, but mot accidents of this kind end up being much more gruesome.

Make sure you are extremely careful when walking through parking lots. Don’t assume you are safe and always be ready with an exit strategy in case someone’s car goes out of control.

Also, it is important to protect your financial future. If you’ve been hurt in an accident, you will have medical bills, lost wages and long-term expenses. You should not have to shoulder the financial burden if someone else is responsible for the accident that caused your injuries.
