How to minimize truck driver fatigue accidents

There is almost nothing more dangerous to drivers throughout Tennessee than truck drivers who are exhausted on the road. When a driver is so tired he or she can’t see straight or stay awake, this obviously increases the danger for everyone.

There have been many efforts over the years to minimize these dangers, from both regulatory agencies and from inside the trucking industry. One of the most important efforts has been to regulate the amount of hours drivers are on the road at a time to make sure long working hours aren’t contributing to the risk. But this isn’t good enough. There are areas that still lack oversight and danger still exists.

Long Road Trips before Driving

One of the most important areas that need oversight involves the commutes drivers take before they get behind the wheel for a long haul. A recent Overdrive online magazine article discusses upcoming efforts by the Department of Transportation (DOT) to determine the commute times truck drivers are dealing with.

The idea is to see how many drivers are taking exceedingly long commutes before they log in for their hauls.

The problem right now is that, no matter how strict the reporting is for hours on the road, this reporting does not include the time drivers spend driving before they start counting their time over the road. Gaining some insight into drivers’ commute times could provide some ideas for solutions to this problem going forward.

In Tennessee, truck accidents caused by exhausted drivers are all too common. Hopefully the DOT’s efforts will minimize these accidents, but that will be some time in the future. In the meantime, if you have been hurt in a truck accident, talk to us. Our lawyers can help you.
