The sad story of a pedestrian death

A Gulfport woman was struck and killed Tuesday in a pedestrian accident along Three Rivers Road, near Windsong Drive.

It was a sad event, one of many hundreds, a woman on foot snuffed out in the early morning by an automobile. Police ruled the death accidental. But it is still an ugly thought, a car striking a young woman and ending her life.

The woman has been identified as Davitra Kelly, 18 years old. She was walking on the side of the road when she was hit by a Nissan Sentra. She was declared dead around 6:30 a.m. in Golden Park Hospital's ER. [Source: Accidents in]

Every year about 20 persons are killed in pedestrian knockdowns. Many happen at intersections. A large number involve youngsters on bicycles, mothers with young children, the elderly and disabled.

There is a paradox in pedestrian fatalities. While the number of overall traffic fatalities is decreasing, the percentage of pedestrian deaths is increasing.

In 2013, more than 4,700 pedestrians were knocked down and killed by cars and trucks. The National Highway Safety Administration (NTHSA) estimates that another 66,000 Americans were injured when they were hit by a car.

Be careful, people

One concern is that people are dying because they - both drivers and pedestrians - are not paying attention. Drivers can be distracted by any number of activities in their cars. Pedestrians may be playing Pokemon Go, listening to Katie Perry or crossing by the crosswalk light and not looking in the direction of oncoming traffic.

Wherever the fault lies, it's a comment on our urban society that so many people are getting run over by cars. The Gold Law Firm files wrongful death suits every year against negligent drivers.

But the truth is, we would much sooner people would start paying better attention. That woman's family will never have the pleasure of seeing her smile again.

Be careful out there, people.
