What does the state of Tennessee do to protect young drivers?

If you are a driver in Tennessee and have children who want to drive, there is a Graduated Driver License Program they have to go through. This program is multi-tiered and allows your child to slowly but surely add to his or her skill set and gradually add responsibilities in traffic until he or she is fully comfortable driving in full-on traffic by him or herself.

Avoiding car accidents is the aim of this program and to ensure that your child is totally able to drive his or her vehicle in any type of traffic, from slow country roads to heavy city traffic. Another reason that the state of Tennessee wants your child in this program is because this has proven to be a way of decreasing the chances that your son or daughter is not killed in an accident.

This is a tried and true program and was implemented in July of 2001. The GDL Program places certain restrictions on teenagers who are under 18 years old who have had learner's permits. There is an amount of parent or legal guardian involvement and emphasizes the importance of having a good driving record.

There are three phases to this type of driver's license and they are as follows:

-- Learner's permit

-- Intermediate Restricted License

-- Intermediate Unrestricted License

It isn't a choice -- you have to go through this program is you want to be licensed in the state of Tennessee. Of course, if you are over the age of 18, you don't have to go through these steps. However, if you are 18 or under, you must have performed under the program to receive your regulation driver's license.

Being safe is the whole picture for this course. Avoiding accidents is paramount to the authorities. There are times that no matter how much training you have, you are involved in an accident that is totally not your fault. Calling in a legal professional may be a good idea at this juncture.
