Can animal bites get worse over time?

Getting bitten by a dog or another animal in Tennessee is bad enough, but can the bite actually get worse over time? It's important to consider this if you are looking for compensation, as a bite that gets worse may need further medical treatment in the future, which can bring about brand new costs.

The problem with these bites is that it's very easy for them to become infected. If they are not cleaned properly or treated quickly, the chances of infection go up. However, even bites that are cleaned and treated right away can get infected since bacteria are present.

Worthy of note is that the fact that the majority of animal bites leave bacteria and/or pathogens in the site. A study that looked into these incidents found evidence of these things in a full 85 percent of all cases. If you've been bitten, it's far more likely that you've been exposed to bacteria than that you've gotten away with a clean bite.

Bacteria does not lead to infection in all cases. Still, the stats show that infections can and do happen. Of those who are bitten by dogs, about 15 to 20 percent suffer from infections. The numbers jump up drastically for cat bites, with infections showing up in 30 to 50 percent of all cases. Both animals have a lot of bacteria, but dogs do not have teeth that are as sharp, so a bite from a cat pushes that bacteria deeper below the skin and into the wound.

If you have been bitten and you're facing medical bills, disfigurement and much more, be sure that you know your rights.
