Grandmother dies holding child in car wreck in her own garage

In a bizarre turn of events, a Memphis grandmother was killed while holding her grandchild and standing in her own garage. The 6-month old child is reported to be fine, as is the driver that caused this terrible car wreck. Police are still investigating the exact causes of the crash.

According to authorities, the driver lost control of the vehicle while driving down a street adjacent to the victim's home. The vehicle jumped a curb, where it made contact with a cement barrier that bounced it back onto the sidewalk again. It then crossed two lanes of traffic, across two other yards, ran down a fence and crossed a median. It finally crashed into the victim's garage, pinning the 69-year-old grandmother against her one vehicle that was parked inside. She was reported dead at the scene.

There is no information yet as to the status of the driver of the vehicle, other than that he is not seriously injured. Police will continue to collect evidence and witness statements to try to piece together all of the details. Often, when car wrecks like this take place, there are several factors involved such as driving at a high rate of speed, distracted driving and sometimes impaired driving due to drugs or alcohol. Police and forensic technicians will be working to provide evidence for possible criminal charges against the driver, which also may be of use for a potential wrongful death claim should the surviving family decide to pursue one.

This Memphis family has suffered terrible consequences from this unexpected and devastating car wreck. The family will suffer the grief of having lost their loved one and will also have to make repairs to their home and vehicles. Knowing what legal options are available to seek recovery of these monetary damages may help make these additional stresses easier to bear.
