2016 was a deadly year for Tennessee drivers

Driving is an inherently dangerous activity. No matter how hard we work to mitigate the associated risks, there is always a possibility of some type of accident happening. This has been particularly noticeable for many Tennessee drivers for the last year.

Unfortunately for many people, researchers and safety officials have been unable to point to any one thing in particular that has caused an increase in traffic fatalities over the course of 2016. Instead, the increase seems to be coming as a result of multiple factors and trends.

Factors

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently compiled and released data that may shed some light on what they believe to be factors that contributed to the rise of traffic fatalities. Even so, they have not been able to identify any definitive causes. They have, however, been able to distinguish trends that may have contributed. They include,

· More people on the road - As the economy has improved, gas prices have fallen and people have had more money to invest in travel. As a result, more people have been on the road recently than in previous years. As the number of vehicles on the road increases, it is logical that the number of accidents would also increase.

· Distracted driving - Developments in technology have led to a great number of things, including more safety features in our vehicles than ever before. However, this rise in technology has also made our devices more accessible than ever. The increase of accidents caused by distracted driving is hard to deny. However, this has also led to the increase in laws seeking to reduce the amount of distraction while driving. The majority of states in the nation have enacted some form of legislation focused at reducing texting and driving in particular and distracted driving in general.

· Weather - During the summer months, when the days are longer, people tend to do more driving. This can often lead to greater fatigue and a higher chance of drowsy driving. With some longer than average winters, the number of drowsy drivers may have been increased.

Regardless of the causes, people have more reason than ever to act responsibly and to exercise caution when operating a vehicle. If you are involved in a vehicle accident and suffer injuries and/or losses as a result, it is suggested that you obtain the services of a knowledgeable legal professional. They will be able to use their expertise to guide you through the legal system as you work to get the justice you deserve.
