Tire blowouts lead to serious crashes

Did you know that tire blowouts can lead to serious accidents? This is especially true with semis and other large vehicles because losing one tire can throw so much weight in the wrong direction. A smaller, light vehicle -- like a family sedan -- may veer slightly in the lane, but a semi can pitch violently to the side, leave the road and even roll when it hits the ditch.

That's exactly what happened in one interstate crash that took a life over in Virginia. The entire accident was captured on the dashcam of a trucker behind the vehicle that crashed. In that video, a visible puff of air and debris starts the whole thing, and then the truck lurches to the side and rolls. The entire crash takes just a split second, with almost no time at all between a safe drive and a fatal crash.

In that accident, no one else was injured because the truck was alone on the highway and veered immediately off of the road, to the side away from the median. However, it's not hard to imagine how bad the accident could have been if the truck had gone the other direction, hitting a car in the left lane or even crossing the median and running into traffic coming from the other direction.

While there can be many reasons for a blowout, improper maintenance is often cited, as tires are used too long before being changed. Another common issue is speeding, as these truck tires are all rated below 81 mph -- and often below 75 mph.
