Dashcams reveal over 50 percent of accidents involve distraction

Dashcams have become very popular for many reasons, including their usefulness in an accident, as they can help to establish what happened and who was at fault. However, a new study examined dashcam footage and found that distracted driving may be even more of an issue than many people assumed, perhaps causing more than 50 percent of all teen car crashes.

The study itself was conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. To do it, they got footage of accidents from a full 1,700 crashes. In the study, the cameras were oriented so that they could monitor what the drivers in the accidents were doing right before crashing.

The AAA Foundation discovered that about six out of every 10 teen drivers -- for those involved in significant accidents -- were distracted in some way before the crash. On the whole, this showed up in 58 percent of the videos. While this can't tell the story for all accidents in Tennessee, 1,700 is a fairly large sample size.

While the use of mobile phones did show up in many wrecks, coming in at 12 percent, it was not the biggest factor, which may come as a surprise to some. Instead, the most drivers -- 15 percent -- were just distracted because they had taken their eyes off of the road to communicate or interact with the various passengers who were in the cars with them.

Have you been involved in a wreck that was caused by a distracted teen driver? If you have, be sure to look into all of your legal options and your potential right to compensation.
